ISAAC'S BRIDE
Isaac was sad and lonely after his mother died.
His father, Abraham, wanted his fine son to have a good and kind wife to make
him happy. So, one day Abraham sent out a very trusted servant to find a
bride for Isaac.
Abraham didn't want just any wife for his son. He
made the servant promise to go and find the wife that God had chosen for
Isaac. This woman would be from Abraham's home country of Haran and
not from the place they were now living in, Canaan.
When the servant started out on his important journey
towards Haran, he took 10 camels and some special gifts with him. As he
traveled, the servant prayed and asked God to help him find just the right
bride for Isaac. They came to a well for a drink and a rest, and the
servant prayed again, "Lord God of my master Abraham, help me today.
Let it be that when I say to a girl, 'let down the pitcher that I
may drink' that she will say to me, 'drink, and I will give your camels a
drink also until they are done drinking.' Then I will know that she is
the wife You have chosen for Isaac."
Just as soon as the servant had finished praying that
prayer, a beautiful young woman named Rebekah came to the well. She
carried a pitcher which she filled at the well and placed on her shoulder to
carry. Abraham's servant said to Rebekah, "Let down the pitcher
that I may drink." Rebekah lowered the pitcher from her shoulder
and answered him and said, "Drink, and I will give your camels a drink
also until they are done drinking."
Right away the servant knew . . . THIS IS THE BRIDE FOR
ISAAC. He gave Rebekah some gifts of jewelry that he had brought with
him, and then he asked about her home and her family.
Rebekah was excited, too, and she ran home to tell her
family about the servant who had come from far-away Canaan. The servant
was invited to come and stay at Rebekah's family's home. He explained
why he had come to that country and how he had prayed and asked God to show
him clearly which young woman was to be Isaac's bride.
Because Rebekah loved God too, she understood that God
sent the servant to her. God had led the servant to the right place at
the right time. And, God put it in her heart to offer the servant and
his camels a drink. Rebekah knew, just like that servant, that she was
to be Isaac's bride. And she was willing.
The very next morning, the servant started out on his
journey back to Canaan. Rebekah was happy to go with him.
As the group came near to Abraham's home, Rebekah saw
Isaac working in the field. She loved him as soon as she saw him, and
Isaac loved her too. Rebekah became Isaac's bride.
This reminds me about Someone else who is looking for
His bride. That Someone is Jesus. Jesus is looking for men and
women and boys and girls who will love Him and become members of His
family. We don't deserve to be in God's family, but Jesus made it
possible for us to be in God's family. Jesus died and rose again so we
could have our sins forgiven.
Are you part of God's family? Have you accepted
Jesus as your Savior? If not, why not make that important decision
today.
If you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, then you are
the bride of Christ. One day we will be with the Bridegroom, Jesus, in
that wonderful place called Heaven.
"As the bridegroom rejoiceth over the
bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee." (Isaiah 62:5).
