LARAINE IN THE HOSPITAL

Laraine woke up with a start!  It was so dark in her room.  Then she remembered . . . she wasn't in her own room.  She was in the hospital.  Laraine shuddered as she remembered the horrible experience.

It was just yesterday when 9-year-old Laraine was coming home from town with her mother.  Laraine was in the backseat of the car, but she wasn't wearing her seatbelt like she should have been.  The car was rounding a corner on the country road - a rocky bank was on the left side of the road and a wide creek was on the right side of the road.  All of a sudden, a car came flying fast right towards them.  Laraine's mom slammed on the brakes and tried to pull her car to the side, but there was nowhere to go.  It was too late.  The other car hit their car with a crushing force.  Laraine's mom hit the steering wheel, but Laraine flew out of the seat and went right through the windshield.

It was all so mixed up after that.  Mother crying.  Policemen giving orders.  Sirens.  An ambulance.  Then, at the hospital, Laraine guessed that she had gone to sleep.

When the nurse came in to check on her later, Laraine asked, "What happened to me?  When can I go home?"

"You will be going home tomorrow, Laraine," the nurse answered.  "You are a very lucky little girl.  You could have been killed in that terrible accident."

The next morning, Laraine's mother came in to see how Laraine was doing and to take her home.  Laraine asked her mother a question.  "Mom, if I had died yesterday in the accident, would I have gone to Heaven?"

Laraine's mom choked back tears as she answered her daughter's question.  "Laraine, you know what the Bible says.  Jesus died on the cross and paid for the sins of the whole world so that it would be possible for us to go to Heaven.  But, you must do your part.  You must admit to God that you are a sinner, and you must receive the Lord Jesus as your Savior by asking Him to come into your heart."

Laraine's mother paused for a moment.  Then she looked at her daughter as she laid in the hospital bed all broken and bruised.  Mother asked, "Are you ready to do that?  Are you ready to accept Jesus as your Savior so that you are ready for Heaven?"

"Yes, Mommy," Laraine said, "I know I need Jesus to save me."

That very morning, Laraine told Jesus she was sorry for her sins, and she asked Jesus to come into her heart and to be her Savior.  A happy smile was on her face.  She knew that no matter what happened to her from now on, it would be okay.  She knew Jesus, and someday she would be with Him in Heaven.

What about you?  Do you know for sure that if you died today you would be ready for Heaven?  If you have accepted Jesus, then you can be sure.  You should thank Him today for what He's done for you.  If you have never accepted Jesus as your Savior, then don't put that off.  You don't know what tomorrow brings.  Be ready for Heaven.  Ask Jesus to save you today.
